Cuba's opportunity" is a color lithograph printed by J. Ottmann Lithographing Co. and dated January 29, 1902, though it first appeared as a cartoon in *Puck*, the New York satirical weekly, on January 29, 1901. The subject headings point to commerce and the sugar industry, which were central to Cuba's economy and to American businesses with stakes on the island. The United States was then occupying Cuba after the Spanish-American War, and debates over its future, including the Platt Amendment of 1901 and the tariff arrangements that later shaped Cuban sugar trade, drew close attention in the American press. Cartoons like this one used commercial imagery to comment on that policy for a general readership.
