Few places in American industry carry as much weight as the Homestead Steel Works on the Monongahela River, and this 8 by 10 inch glass negative records the mill's heavy work of pulling a steel slab from a furnace. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its photographs of American landscapes, cities and industry, made the image sometime between 1900 and 1910. By then Homestead was part of Carnegie Steel and had become a symbol of both the nation's industrial might and its labor conflict, especially after the bitter 1892 strike. The dark interior and the figures dwarfed by machinery show the scale and danger of the work.
