The Great Sphinx at Giza is the subject of this 1877 print, one of the views in an album of Egyptian scenes compiled by someone identified only as R.V. McK. The Sphinx's lion body and human head, carved from the limestone bedrock near the pyramids, had been half-buried by drifting sand for much of its history, and nineteenth-century clearing efforts gradually exposed more of it. Photographers working in Egypt in the 1870s sold and shared views like this one with travelers and armchair readers, who wanted to see monuments they might never visit. Note the Sphinx's scale against the surrounding desert and the pyramids behind it.
