Bessel's 1898 likeness comes from *Das neunzehnte Jahrhundert in Bildnissen*, a German series of nineteenth-century portraits edited by Karl Werckmeister, where it appears as number 84 in the first volume. The image reproduces a painting by Wolf, engraved by Mandel, and the halftone process let the publisher print it cheaply in a book. The sitter, Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel (1784-1846), was an astronomer and mathematician who directed the Königsberg observatory. In 1838 he made the first reliable measurement of a star's distance, that of 61 Cygni, by stellar parallax, and his work on the functions that bear his name remains standard in physics and engineering.
