Casey Stengel and Mickey Mantle share the frame in a dugout with two other men, a quiet moment that a contact-sheet print preserves in its original small format. Stengel managed the Yankees from 1949 through 1960, building a dynasty that won a string of pennants, and Mantle was the young switch-hitting center fielder who became the team's centerpiece in the early 1950s. Kenneth Eide's photograph came into the Look magazine library in April 1953, when the magazine was reporting heavily on the sport. The record does not name the other two men, so the picture is best read as a glimpse of the club's inner life during its championship run.
