Toledo's grain trade in 1882 ran on structures like this one, a railroad grain elevator built to store and transfer bulk grain between rail cars and lake or canal shipping. The Union Railroad Elevator Company was one of several such firms on the Maumee River waterfront, where the city's position on Lake Erie made it a major shipping point for wheat and corn from the surrounding farm country. Elevators of this kind were tall timber or brick towers that let gravity move grain through the building, so their silhouettes were a familiar sight along the river. Worth noticing is how the working waterfront shaped the growth of a city that was then expanding rapidly with the railroads.
