Toledo's waterfront is the particular focus here, with the Maumee River and its boats and piers shown at the edge of the city. Toledo sits where the Maumee empties into the western end of Lake Erie, so its harbor grew as a place for shipping grain, lumber and iron ore through the 19th century. Views like this one, often made as engravings for city directories, booster publications or illustrated atlases, were meant to show a growing port that was open for commerce. Look at the masts and the lined-up piers, which signal how much the city depended on the river and the lake.
