Steamboats are the detail that sets this view apart. The record names the Island Queen, a side-wheel steamer, and the picture pairs her with the Roebling Suspension Bridge spanning the Ohio River between Cincinnati and Covington, Kentucky. Completed in 1866 and designed by John A. Roebling, the bridge was a forerunner of his Brooklyn Bridge, and it carried both road and foot traffic over the river for decades. Side-wheelers like the Island Queen were a familiar sight on the Ohio in the early 1900s, when river excursions were a popular pastime. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass negative around 1907, documented American towns and landmarks for sale as views, so the photograph captures a working river city at the height of its steamboat era.
