The Burnet House was one of the grand hotels of antebellum Cincinnati, and this hand-colored lithograph shows it as its builders wanted it seen: a large, orderly façade meant to signal the city's commercial confidence. The print was issued by Onken's Lithography of Cincinnati, a firm known for city views in the 1850s, and the artist credit to A. Forbriger points to the skilled draftsmanship that made such views popular with travelers and local buyers. Hotels like the Burnet were central to a river city that was growing fast as a hub for trade and steamboat traffic. Notice the hand coloring, which was applied by hand to each impression and gives the building and street a lively, individual finish.
