Lead with the product itself: this 1870 lithograph was made to sell a wrought iron bridge from the Wrought Iron Bridge Company of Canton, Ohio. The record links the design to a patent granted to Hammond and Abbott on April 26, 1870, and places the subject at Ottawa, Illinois. Cleveland printers W.J. Morgan & Company produced the sheet, and it reflects the period's shift from timber and cast iron toward wrought iron for bridge spans. Today it works both as an engineering record and as a piece of sales literature.
