Few photographs of 19th-century Ohio bridges show the engineering as clearly as this view of R.W. Smith's patent truss bridge at Tippecanoe City, in Miami County. Patented truss designs like Smith's were popular with county and village builders because they combined timber, iron rods, and standard parts that could be assembled on site. Bridges of this kind carried farm wagons, mail coaches, and local traffic between the small towns and farms of the Miami Valley. Tippecanoe City was later absorbed into the neighboring town of Tipp City, so the bridge belongs to a village that no longer exists under its original name.
