*Summer in Ohio* is a color chromolithograph published by J. Hoover of Philadelphia around 1884, a date that falls in the peak years of the medium's popularity. Chromolithography built up color with a separate stone for each hue, which let printers produce inexpensive, richly colored scenes for parlor walls. The record's subjects, houses and boats, point to a leisurely view of summer, even though the print was made in Philadelphia, far from the state it shows. Its copyright was registered in the printer's name, a reminder that such images were sold as commercial goods.
