Taken from an elevated vantage point, this view looks east down the newly opened Central Parkway in Cincinnati, a broad boulevard cut through the city's core. The parkway followed the route of the old Miami and Erie Canal, which had long since lost its commercial role, so the street marked a deliberate break from the canal-era city. The photograph shows the business district at the time, when Cincinnati was growing rapidly as a manufacturing and commercial center. Its high angle makes the new roadway's layout and the surrounding blocks easy to read.
