This lithograph presents "Turner life" in Cincinnati, the social world of the city's German gymnastic societies, and its title credits F. Bertsch with both drawing and lithographing it, with a note that it was made in care of the Turnerhalle, the societies' hall. The print was issued around 1850 by Ellicott & Forbriger, a Cincinnati firm, and its hand coloring suggests it was meant to be looked at closely. Turner clubs grew out of the German gymnastics movement and were brought to America by immigrants after the political upheavals of 1848, when many members also favored liberal reform. Cincinnati's large German population made it one of the movement's strongest centers, so the picture is a useful record of how these men gathered and presented themselves.
