Among the Detroit Publishing Company's views, this October 1890 mammoth glass negative shows a cotton plantation at Richmond, Mississippi, and its subject list includes piers and wharves, which suggests a river landing where cotton was loaded for shipping. The record notes that it may have been published as the right section of a two-part panorama. The firm's listing in the 1898 *catalog of the W.H. Jackson Views* spells the place "Richland," a reminder that place names were often recorded inconsistently. Cotton was the leading crop across much of Mississippi at the time, so the picture offers a documentary look at the working landscape of the postwar South.
