Hunting poses set this glass negative apart from the company's many portraits, and its title, taken from the jacket it was stored in, names a man called Billy and his "mistress." In hunting usage, a mistress could be the woman who led a hunt, so the word may point to a sporting role rather than a romance, though the record does not settle the question. The Detroit Publishing Company made this view sometime between about 1895 and 1910, when it produced large numbers of photographs of scenery, towns, and everyday life across the United States. The 8 by 10 inch plate was a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
