Men kissing during a demonstration set this Atlanta picture apart from many AIDS protests of the late 1980s, because public displays of affection between gay men were themselves a political statement. ACT UP, the direct-action group founded in New York in 1987, pressed for faster drug trials, lower prices and a stronger federal response to a disease that was killing thousands. Klein made the photograph in 1988, and it was later reprinted in a 1997 survey of American history. It shows how activists turned intimacy into protest in a city that is home to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
