Two demonstrators share a kiss at an Atlanta protest staged by ACT UP, the AIDS activist group, in 1988. The public display was deliberately confrontational, since same-sex affection in public drew hostility at the time. Such kiss-ins and die-ins were part of the group's direct-action tactics, meant to press officials to respond to the epidemic and to bring attention to the many gay men who were dying. William Klein's photograph was later included in *Eyes of the Nation*, a 1997 survey of American visual history.
