The negative is titled "Atlanta," but a second title written on it reads "Atalanta," the swift huntress of Greek myth who agreed to marry any suitor who could outrun her. The archive's catalogers concluded that "Atalanta" is the intended title, so the picture's subject is probably that figure rather than the Georgia city. Made on July 4, 1896, the glass negative carries a Detroit Publishing Co. number and the attribution rests on its title style and numbering. It came to the State Historical Society of Colorado as a gift and reached the Library of Congress from there.
