Ernest Shackleton, the Anglo-Irish polar explorer whose name appears here with the title "Sir," was knighted in 1909 after leading the Nimrod expedition, which came within about 97 miles of the South Pole. The George Grantham Bain Collection came from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news pictures, but the record says this title is unverified, so the identification rests on the caption alone. Shackleton's later Endurance expedition, which ended in 1915 when the ship was crushed in Antarctic pack ice and the crew survived, made him one of the best-known figures of the period.
