Few performers of the 1920s rose as quickly as Vernon Dalhart, the Texas-born singer named in this Bain News Service glass negative. Dalhart recorded for many labels, and his 1924 version of "The Prisoner's Song" is often cited as the first country record to sell a million copies. The Bain agency, run by George Grantham Bain in New York, supplied newspapers and magazines with portraits and news pictures, so a plate like this likely served a press or publicity purpose. The record gives no date or occasion, and the identification comes from the original caption data, which was not independently verified.
