Dancer Vernon Castle, who performed with his wife Irene in a popular ballroom act, died in a training plane crash in Texas in February 1918 while serving with the Royal Flying Corps. This glass negative is catalogued under the title "Vernon Castle funeral," though the record notes that the title comes from unverified Bain News Service data and the date is unknown. Bain's staff, working out of New York, photographed news events and public figures for newspapers and magazines, so the picture likely records a wartime-era memorial occasion. Its small glass plate format was standard for the agency's working files of that period.
