Sir Auckland Geddes was an anatomist who taught at McGill University before entering British wartime government as Minister of National Service. From 1920 to 1924 he served as British ambassador to the United States, a post that brought him regularly before American press photographers in Washington. This glass negative carries its title from Bain News Service caption cards, and the Library of Congress notes that the identification is unverified, so the occasion and date remain uncertain. The Bain agency supplied news pictures to newspapers across the country from about 1900 into the early 1930s.
