Keppler's color lithograph, titled "The Crown Prince," ran on the cover of the August 1, 1906, issue of *Puck*, and its subjects are William Howard Taft and Theodore Roosevelt. Taft, then secretary of war, was widely seen as Roosevelt's chosen successor, and he won the Republican nomination in 1908 and the presidency in 1909. *Puck*, a humor weekly published by Keppler & Schwarzmann, used cartoons like this one to comment on the political questions of the day. The title alone frames the joke as a matter of inheritance, which makes the cover a useful snapshot of how the press discussed the succession before 1908.
