This color lithograph by Joseph Keppler casts Theodore Roosevelt as a ship's captain at the helm, a metaphor for a new president steering the country into a new year. Roosevelt had taken office in September 1901 after the assassination of William McKinley, so readers at the start of 1902 were watching closely to see how he would handle the job. Keppler, a Vienna-born cartoonist, founded *Puck* and was known for its large, colorful cover cartoons, which often mixed political commentary with a light touch. The image is a useful example of how the magazine used familiar symbols to comment on national affairs.
