Calle Real, the principal street of Cavite, a town on the southwestern shore of Manila Bay, is the subject here, in a photograph dated around 1899. Cavite had long been a Spanish naval base and port, and its harbor was the scene of the Battle of Cavite in May 1898, when American naval forces destroyed the Spanish squadron anchored there. A view like this one, taken in the months afterward, captures a provincial town in transition, with everyday street life continuing under new military and colonial arrangements. The print carries the number 274, which suggests it belonged to a numbered series.
