Cavite Province, on the southern shore of Manila Bay, is the setting for these young women, whose clothing is the second subject named in the record. The picture dates to about 1899, a turbulent year. Cavite had been a center of the Philippine Revolution against Spain, and the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War that followed brought American soldiers and photographers into the islands. Pictures like this one were widely circulated in the United States as glimpses of local life and dress, though they were often posed for outside viewers, so the "maidens" in the title reflects the outsider's framing as much as the sitters' own.
