Among the many National Photo Company views of Herbert Hoover, this glass negative stands out for its setting: Hoover is pictured with a group of high school cadet officers, a reminder that his public appearances in 1929 reached young people as well as political audiences. The record dates the scene to April 15, 1929, only weeks after Hoover took office as the 31st president on March 4. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm, documented official life and visiting dignitaries with a large staff of photographers, and its glass plates were widely distributed to newspapers. Note the faint streaks and blemishes on the negative, which come from age-related breakdown of its coatings.
