Taken four days after Herbert Hoover's inauguration on March 4, 1929, this glass negative records his newly installed cabinet in the first weeks of his presidency. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio that documented government officials and public events in the 1910s and 1920s, made the plate, which reached the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Glass negatives like this one are fragile, and the streaks and blemishes visible on this example come from deterioration of the original coating. The date in the title is taken from unverified information on the negative or its sleeve.
