Printed with brown backgrounds, this card belongs to the American Tobacco Company's T207 issue, and the "Brown Backgrounds" title was devised by Library of Congress staff to tell it apart from its siblings. Cards like this were packed with cigarettes in the early 1910s, giving buyers a collectible portrait of a ballplayer along with their purchase. The image was made with relief and halftone processes, which allowed a mass-produced color print to carry surprising detail. The card is part of the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection and shows how early baseball fandom and tobacco advertising grew up together.
