The name "Brown Backgrounds" was devised by Library staff to identify this card's color scheme, and it places the card within the T207 series that the American Tobacco Company issued as a cigarette card set. Tobacco makers packed cards like this one into cigarette packages to encourage repeat purchases, and collectors later gathered them into albums. The brown background was one of several color variants in the set. The record dates the print to 1912, and it comes from the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection of baseball cards in the Library's Prints and Photographs Division.
