Taken on October 10, 1919, in Washington, D.C., this glass negative records a group of girls playing softball, a sport that was becoming popular with young players at the time. The negative belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, the Washington studio whose staff documented street life, sports and public events in the capital in the early twentieth century. The title comes from unverified data written on the negative sleeve, so the exact game and players are not known. Streaks and other blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of its original coating, which is worth keeping in mind when viewing the image.
