Eagle Peak rises on the southern rim of Yosemite Valley, and this 1894 view catches it above a sea of clouds, a sight that visitors on the valley floor rarely got to see. The print was issued by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company, a firm known for selling views of American scenery to a broad public in the 1890s, and its title appears in both English and Spanish. Its copyright registration with the U.S. Copyright Office makes it a useful record of how the valley was marketed to tourists at the time. Its composition shows why such scenes drew travelers to the Sierra Nevada.
