Printed under the name Fort Marion, this poster dates from the years when the Spanish stronghold in St. Augustine carried the name of Francis Marion, the South Carolina militia leader of the American Revolution. American officials adopted that name in the 1820s, after Florida passed to the United States, and it stayed in use until 1942, when the fort regained its Spanish title, Castillo de San Marcos. Spain began building the masonry fort in 1672 and largely finished it in the 1690s, using coquina, a soft shell limestone that absorbed cannon fire rather than shattering. The fort never fell to an attack, and later it held Native American prisoners, including the Apache leader Geronimo, in the 1880s.
