Mammoth Cave, in south-central Kentucky, is the longest known cave system in the world, with more than 400 miles of surveyed passageways, and this map charts that labyrinth as it was understood at the time it was drawn. Cartographers of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries had to piece together routes from lantern-lit surveys, so maps like this one were both records of exploration and guides for the guides who led tourists through the dark. The cave has been a visitor destination since the early 1800s and became a national park in 1941, which helped turn its sprawling underground network into a subject of careful, ongoing mapping.
