Montgomery, Alabama, in 1887 was the state capital and a river town on the Alabama River, where cotton from the surrounding plantation country was weighed, sold and shipped out by steamboat and rail. Its railroads made it a regional junction, and merchants, cotton factors and state officials filled the downtown blocks below the Capitol on Goat Hill. Residents still remembered that the city had served as the first capital of the Confederacy in early 1861, a fact that shaped local pride and local arguments alike. In 1886 the city began running electric streetcars, among the earliest such systems in the country, and the new lines were already carrying people along the main avenues.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Montgomery, Alabama, drawn in 1887. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
