Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in 1887 was a river town on the Black Warrior that had served as the state capital until 1846, when the seat moved to Montgomery. Its trade depended on cotton shipped down the river and on the railroads and merchants that grew up during the postwar revival known as the New South, while coal and iron mining in the surrounding hills drew new investment through the decade. The University of Alabama, chartered in 1831, anchored civic life, and Union cavalry had burned much of its campus in April 1865, so the school was still rebuilding in these years. Residents knew the town as much for its college as for its warehouses and wharves, and the streets on this map show that mix.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, drawn in 1887. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
