Printed as a numbered key, this card lists a set of views taken inside Mammoth Cave, where photographers lit each scene with burning magnesium instead of daylight. The bright, brief flash let early cameras record dark chambers and rock formations on glass plates, which made underground photography possible long before modern flash units. Mammoth Cave in south-central Kentucky had drawn visitors since the early 1800s, and guides such as Stephen Bishop helped lead tourists through its passages. The numbers let viewers match each card to a named spot in the cave.
