The Water Clock is one of the named features that visitors to Mammoth Cave in Kentucky were taught to look for, and this card records it as a stop on the cave tour. Its name suggests the steady drip of water that shapes the formation and gives it a rhythm, a quality that guides often pointed out to visitors. This view is number 11 in a series of Mammoth Cave stereographs, cards meant to be seen through a stereoscope, which gave viewers a three-dimensional sense of the cave's passages and stone. Around 1900, such cards were a common way for people far from Kentucky to experience the cave's dramatic scenery.
