Few places were harder for early photographers than the dark passages of Mammoth Cave, and this view was made with magnesium light, which was burned to throw a brief, bright glare across the rock. With no daylight reaching the interior, a photographer had to carry in heavy equipment, set up the camera, and time the flash carefully, so the scene captures a moment of deliberate effort. Mammoth Cave in Edmonson County drew tourists long before it became part of the national park system in 1941, and cards like this one helped spread its image to people who would never descend its passages.
