Titled "The Lovers Leap," this stereograph card is number 31 in a series of views of Mammoth Cave and the surrounding Kentucky countryside. Cave guides in the nineteenth century often gave dramatic or romantic names to rock formations and passages, and the names helped shape how visitors experienced the tour. Stereograph cards were viewed through a stereoscope, which merged two slightly offset photographs into one image with depth, so parlor viewers could feel they were walking the passages themselves. The series was published by William I. Marshall, and the copyright is credited to Ben Hains.
