This picture ties Zion's landscape to the people who explained it to visitors, the ranger naturalists who led walks and talks in the park. Zion became a national park in 1919, after earlier protection as Mukuntuweap National Monument, and its canyon walls drew growing crowds in the years that followed. The naturalist work grew out of the National Park Service's broader push during the 1920s and 1930s to help visitors understand geology, plants, and wildlife, not just see the scenery. The record doesn't say more about this scene, so the uniform and setting are worth a close look.
