This poster announces a 1939 production of Bizet's *Carmen* by the Cuyahoga County Opera Association, the Ohio group based around Cleveland, with the Federal Music Project as sponsor. The Federal Music Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, paid musicians and singers during the Depression and brought low-cost concerts and opera to communities across the country. The opera itself comes from Prosper Mérimée's 1845 novella about a seductive Romani cigarette worker and the soldier who falls under her spell, and the poster's silkscreen color and bold bullfighter imagery show the WPA artists' visual style of the period. A date stamp on the back, March 27, 1939, helps place the poster in its season.
