Ronald Reagan is the target of this 1981 ink drawing, which borrows the old line "Let 'em eat cake" and aims it at his ethics. The drawing is signed Levine, the caricaturist whose sharp, economical line work appeared in print through the 1980s. The quip is traditionally pinned on Marie Antoinette, though there is no firm evidence she said it, and the cartoon uses that familiar story to suggest indifference to people going without while the new administration pushed its budget and tax changes. Cakes serve as the central prop, a good example of how editorial cartoonists could make a political charge in a single glance.
