Here a team of girls is shown playing soccer, a subject that stands apart from the company's more common street and portrait scenes. The National Photo Company worked in Washington, D.C., during the years around the First World War, and its negatives document a broad range of local life and news. Organized women's soccer was still uncommon in the United States at that time, which gives this glass plate, dated roughly 1918 to 1920, added interest. Look closely and you will see streaks and blemishes caused by the natural deterioration of the original coating, a reminder of how fragile these negatives are.
