Here the Pennsylvania senator Boies Penrose is pictured at the National Zoological Park in Washington, D.C., beside a bison, an unexpectedly informal setting for a man of his standing. Penrose served in the U.S. Senate from 1897 until his death in 1921 and was one of the most powerful Republican party leaders of his day. The negative belongs to the National Photo Company collection, whose Washington glass plates record the city's public life in the years around the First World War. The glass shows streaks from deterioration of its original coating.
