Labor leader William Z. Foster appears in this glass negative dated October 3, 1919, a few weeks after the great steel strike he helped organize began that September. As secretary-treasurer of the American Federation of Labor's organizing committee for steelworkers, Foster directed a campaign that drew hundreds of thousands of workers from mills across the Midwest and East. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C. firm that documented public life in the 1910s and 1920s, made the image. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes on the plate, which come from the natural deterioration of its original coating.
