Theodore Roosevelt is the speaker this crowd turned out to hear, according to the title, though the record gives no date for the occasion. After leaving the presidency in 1909, Roosevelt addressed large audiences on the campaign trail and at public events, and photographers often sought out such gatherings. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers across the country. Because the title rests on caption information recorded by the agency that has not been independently verified, the exact event remains uncertain.
