The Chicago Coliseum stood on Wabash Avenue as one of the city's largest indoor halls, and this glass negative shows it as a public gathering place rather than a single event. The hall hosted national political conventions, including the 1896 Democratic convention, where William Jennings Bryan delivered his "Cross of Gold" speech, along with boxing matches, circuses, and exhibitions. The Bain News Service, which produced this negative, was a wire photo agency that documented Chicago and national news in the early 1900s. The record does not confirm the date or the exact occasion, so the title is best read as a label from the agency's caption cards.
