A crowd gathered in Chicago is the subject here, though the record does not say which convention or event drew them, so the title itself should be read with caution. Chicago hosted many national political conventions and large public gatherings from the late 1800s onward, and crowd pictures from those years often show delegates, supporters, and spectators packed into halls, streets, or hotel lobbies. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made from a glass negative. Bain News Service, which operated in New York in the early 1900s, sold news photographs to newspapers, so pictures like this one were taken to document events for a fast-moving press.
